Introduction

Welcome to my -Britt the Builder- Blog.
I want to take you on the journey of designing and building my custom home in the country.  This is the story of how sweat equity made my dreams become reality.

I have always loved creating things and never been afraid of a challenge.  Building a home is very hard work, but it can be so rewarding.  My husband and I each spent 60+ hours per week for over a year building this new home.  There has been a lot of blood, sweat, tears and love put into this project.  It is so rewarding to watch something like this come together with your own two hands.  We have planned out every detail and placed every screw, board and nail.  During the home building process, I tried to find every opportunity to include our kids as well.  I wanted to teach them that they are capable of doing hard things.  They also learned to respect our house more and take pride in it.  We feel like, as a team, we can do anything we put our minds to.

I'll start at the beginning of our home building experience.  Shortly after I got married, my husband and I had the opportunity to be in a Self-Help Homeownership Program.  Neither of us had any prior home building skills.  Seven other couples and us learned trades from a general contractor to help build each other's houses.  In the end, we all had the same amount of sweat equity and it got us into our first home.  Although this worked out for us,  it was not for the faint of heart.  There were many arguments and a couple of the families didn't get their required work hours in and ended up not getting their house!   So while most people would spend the year they turn 21 differently, I spent mine on the road to homeownership!   Five years later the market was right to sell our investment.   We decided to be owner/builders of our next home and lived there for almost eight years.

Now, fast forward to the present.   We have four beautiful kids and we had the opportunity to move to the small town my husband grew up in.   We both felt this was the perfect place to raise our children.  The  home construction process began once again!  This time I started from scratch.   I had built a few homes now and I knew what I wanted and what our husband and wife owner/builder team were capable of doing.  We pushed ourselves harder than we ever have and learned new skills.  It's so satisfying to see a project start on paper and turn into your dream home!
